All currently available mycoplasma vaccines are killed vaccines. Unlike with live vaccines, the infectious agent in killed vaccines is not able to multiply in the animals, a valuable feature of live vaccines. In order to stimulate a strong immune response, an adjuvant (= booster) is added to the vaccine to increase its effectiveness. An adjuvant presents the antigen to the pig's immune system in a way that enhances the immune response. |
| Conventional adjuvants are usually water-based which allows the antigen to be quickly released when administered to the animal. However, in order for a vaccine to provide sufficient immune stimulation, a single administration which is quickly released is usually insufficient. Therefore, with killed vaccines, it was usually necessary to administer a "booster vaccination" a short time later. |
| Ingelvac M hyo , a new one-shot depot vaccine utilises a novel adjuvant system which obviates the need for a booster vaccination and has been shown to provides the same level of efficacy as conventional two-shot products. |
