| The efficacy of the Ingelvac M hyo has been demonstrated using a range of different types of study. |
Piglets were vaccinated at three weeks of age with Ingelvac M hyo or a competitor one-shot product and at 3 and 5 weeks of age with a competitor two-shot product. Two other non-vaccinated groups were included in the study. |
All animals except for one of the non-vaccinated groups were experimentally infected with M hyo 2 weeks later. Animals were slaughtered 4 weeks later. |
The following table illustrates that already 29 days post vaccination with Ingelvac M hyo (before challenge), 80% of the piglets had developed antibodies. In contrast, only 55% of the pigs vaccinated with the two-shot vaccine and 0% of the competitor one shot, had done so. |
| Percentage of antibody-positive piglets (tested by ELISA) on day 29 post vaccination: |
 |
Competitor A, two-shot vaccine = 55% |

 |
 |
Competitor One-shot vaccine = 0% |

| Cell-mediated immune response |
Cell-mediated immunity was measured by determining the interferon gamma stimulation index. Interferon is produced within a few hours of infection. Animals whose immune system has already been challenged by a specific pathogen excrete a large quantity of interferon gamma upon renewed contact with the pathogen. The higher the interferon gamma excretion in response to infection, the better the specific, cellular defence. |
Percentage of animals with cell-mediated immune responses (ELISPOT) after infection has occurred |
The results are shown in the following graph. The group that was vaccinated with Ingelvac M hyo was the only group where significantly more animals had a positive interferon gamma stimulation index already 29 and 44 days post vaccination. |
