The course of the illness caused by infection with M hyo depends on the age of the animal at the time of infection, as well and the innate susceptibility/immunity of the individual animal. Management practices will, of course, have an influence on the severity of the disease in the herd. |
| M hyo infection can be transmitted either externally, where a previously disease-free herd becomes infected or internally where infection spreads from pig to pig within an already infected herd. As a general rule, the risk of infection from M. hyo within a herd increases with the age of the animals. |
