Adjuvants are vehicles/carrier systems that have been added to the killed vaccine in order to induce a better immune response. Adjuvants act as a "booster" by optimally presenting the inactivated vaccine antigen to the immune system so that more immune cells are attracted to the injection site. New adjuvant delivery systems provide long-lasting, sustained release of the antigen, thus stimulating the immune system over a longer period of time. The vaccine's high content of biodegradable oils provides this sustained release (depot ) effect which represents the key component of the one-shot vaccine. Every day a small dose of the antigen is presented to the immune system; this has the same effect as the repeat vaccination (booster dose). The adjuvanted vaccine stimulates rapid and sustained production of antibodies and cell-mediated immunity. Vaccine protection is ensured even in conditions of high infection pressure. More... |
